Massage

At Wisbey Osteopathy our practitioners are able to offer a number of variations to traditional bodywork massage, including sports, deep tissue and relaxation massage.

Sports Massage

What is sports massage?
This is a type of massage aimed at improving the body’s function so that athletes and those of you who are physically active can train and compete at their highest level.

Who is sports massage for?
Sports massage isn’t just for the elite. It’s for all athletes of any ability and at any stage of their training programme. It is also great for people who have a specific injury whether they gained that through work or sport, or for people with a physically demanding job.

At Wisbey Osteopathy we focus on 4 main principles:

Prevention
Injury prevention is crucial if you’re training for a big race or competition or rely on being fit for your job. Reaching a vital point in your training programme only to pull a muscle can potentially cause problems reaching the end goal, or being unable to work can have a significant impact on your life. We want to minimise your chances of injury by providing you with excellent care.

Performance
Performing at your best means you can get more out of your training sessions. Massage can help pre-competition by stimulating blood flow and but is equally important to keep yourself working smoothly. Think of it as a body MOT.

Recovery
We understand that sustaining an injury is hard. Knowing you’re going to be in pain and have to make that journey to recovery can be a daunting notion. This is why we’re here to support you and help you get back to your original strength and mobility. Massage can help reduce recovery time.

Rehabilitation
With a background in sport and clinical rehabilitation, we can help decrease the risk of recurrence with advice on lifestyle, stretching and exercise. This will enable you to gain strength and confidence in your newly healed body as well as act as aftercare for your injury and prevention of it happening again.

What will happen on my first visit?
The first appointment will start with a consultation where we will take your personal details and ask you a few questions about your general health, medical history, exercise and injury/reason for visiting us.

Then you will be asked to undress to a certain point depending on your injury. For example, for leg pain we may only need you to undress the lower half of your body to your underwear or change into a pair of shorts. We recommend bringing a pair of small shorts with you to your appointment because it is sometimes necessary to examine your movement during the consultation part of the appointment.

For a pre- or post-marathon treatment we may need to provide you with a full body massage. Your therapist will advise you on what’s best during the consultation stage.

Your therapist will leave the room while you undress and not re-enter the room without knocking to check you are ready. Then the treatment will start.

A treatment plan will also be agreed with you based on what your goals are, and towards the end of your treatment plan stretching and strengthening exercises may be advised, if appropriate, enabling you to continue training and competing at your best.

Deep Tissue Massage

What is deep tissue massage?

This is based on Swedish massage, the most widely practiced form of massage, and probably the most well known in the West. If you have never had a massage before it is a great one to start with. It uses a combination of different massage techniques ranging from long, slow movements along the muscles to shorter, faster movements.

Who is deep tissue massage for?
Traditional deep tissue massage is suitable for almost everyone but it is perfect for people who experience postural related aches and pain, have an old injury that causes a little discomfort every now and again, or those prefer a more vigorous* massage to unwind.

What will happen on my first visit?
Your first visit will start with a short consultation which will give us time to take your details and ask you some quick questions about your general health, medical history, etc. You will also be asked whether you’ve had a massage before and whether there is a specific reason for visiting so that we can understand what you’d like to achieve with you treatment.

Your therapist will leave the room while you undress, cover yourself over with the towel provided, and lay down on the treatment couch; we will not re-enter the room without knocking to make sure you’re ready.

The therapist will usually start with you laying face down depending on your reason for booking your appointment and they may spend longer on one area than another based on your consultation. Then all you need to do it lay back and enjoy your treatment!

Relaxation Massage

What is relaxation massage?

This is a gentle type of massage aimed at soothing the mind, body and soul so that you can leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. Relaxation massage utilises long, slow techniques that follow the contours of the muscles and, on occasion, gentle kneading techniques all to promote that feeling of restfulness.

Who is relaxation massage for?
Relaxation massage is ideal for almost everyone. It’s particularly suitable for people who have a high-pressure job, commute at rush hour, or those who are just in need of a little R & R. A relaxation massage also makes the perfect gift! If this is something you are interested in contact us to purchase a gift voucher.
