Sports Therapy

What Is Sports Therapy?

Sports therapy is based on the principles of sport and exercise sciences, including physiological and pathological processes, focusing on musculoskeletal and soft tissue rehabilitation. There are many similarities to osteopathy and physiotherapy, particularly in experienced sports therapists which we are lucky to have at Wisbey Osteopathy in Tasmin Gentle. This means that the scope of practice for sports therapists can exceed the confines of being solely sport-related treatment focused.

The 5 key principles of sports therapists are:

  • Prevention
  • Assessment and diagnosis
  • Treatment, management or referral
  • Rehabilitation
  • Education

Sports therapists focus on the prevention of injury and rehabilitation back to functional, occupational and/or sports specific fitness, whatever your age or sporting ability. They have the knowledge to assess and diagnose the issue, then use their skills to determine whether a treatment plan, management plan or referral for further intervention is the best course of action. Planning and implementing appropriate rehabilitation and return to training/work programmes is and especially important aspect where they can guide you through ways to look after yourself outside of the treatment room. This ensures each patient fully understands they’re needs and what part they can play in their ongoing health improvement.
